“How to Live to Be 100”
Let’s look at some studies of the world’s centenarians, mostly in Okinawa, Japan. According to Time Magazine in August 2004, Scientists wanted to understand why the Japanese islands are home to the world’s largest population of centenarians with almost 600 of its 1.3 million living into their second century, many of them active and looking decades younger than their actual years. Dr. Thomas Perls, a geriatrician at Boston University feels, “the lesson is pretty clear from my point of view in terms of what the average person should be doing. I strongly believe that with some changes in health-related behavior, each of us can earn the right to have at least 25 years beyond the age of 60---years of healthy life at good function”. Elderly Okinawans tend to get plenty of physical and mental exercise. Their diets are exemplary: low in fat and salt, and high in fruits and vegetables packed with fiber and antioxidant substances that protect against cancer, heart disease and stroke. They consume more soy than any other population on earth (60-120 grams per day compared to 30-50g for the average Japanese, 10 for Chinese and virtually 0 for the average Amercian). Soy is rich in flavenoids—antioxidants strongly linked to low rates of cancer. Aging Okinawans also have a much lower incidence of dementia than their US and European counterparts do. Need convincing evidence that our modern lifestyle can shorten lives? Look at what happens when Okinawans move permanently off the island. They pick up the diet and cultural behaviors of their adopted country and within a generation, their life spans decrease and their rates of cancer and heart attack zoom.
So, is the two minutes of pleasure that you derive from the hot dogs (one of the worst foods you can eat) or french fries, or fried chicken, or McDonalds and other fast foods, or chocolate, or ice cream, or all of the other million desserts worth the serious diseases and conditions you will develop as a result?
60% of American Adults are overweight. 31% of children are obese. Diabetes, cancer and heart disease have either tripled or quadupled in the last 30-40 years depending on the study. Let's wake up and realize that there is a direct correlation.
